It was on a cloudy day one summer
I had just turned nine
I ran across the pasture to a land I'd claimed as mine
Beyond the barbed wire fence
Amidst the comfort of the trees
I felt a presence lurking near there was something watching me
I gathered up my courage
Stood up and looked around
And in the deepest voice I had back then I yelled I will stand my ground
An even deeper voice from somewhere
Said this place ain't yours to claim
I've been here far longer now I want it back again
I said I'm not leaving
This place is my place too
It answered you must be joking kid this ain't a choice I'm giving you
I said come and take it then
If you really think you can
And laughter boomed beyond the trees as a darkness took my land
My parents found me later lying senseless in the rain
After I recovered, though I searched, I never found my place again.
